Hilversum Contemporary Bachelor Pad

Design Brief

The client is a bachelor working in the tech industry. He recently bought an apartment in Hilversum and commissioned me to furnish the common areas (hallway, dining and living area) of the space.

For this assignment, the client wanted a sleek and modern living area where he would spend most of his time outside of working hours listening to music, playing videos games and watching movies. Having traveled extensively throughout his early 20s, the client highly appreciates various cuisines around the world. Once in a while, he would like to invite friends over to share banters, locally brewed beer and homemade food.

The Design Process

Floor Plan

Being a corner apartment, during the day, the space is filled with sunlight thanks to the numerous windows on its exterior walls - a feature to dream for in busy city like Hilversum!

However, this also limits furniture arrangement possibilities since there is one wall in the living area that has enough surface area to accommodate the TV, loud speakers and other electronics for entertainment. This is why I did not make any major changes to the floor plan, except for adding a bookshelf in the lower right corner and a rug to visually separate the living and dining areas.

Mood Board

After analyzing the client’s inspiration photos on Pinterest, I figured that he likes modern, simple aesthetics with a minimal color scheme and a touch of elegance. To make sure that I understood the assignment correctly, I presented the above concept mood board to show him various design features well as the type of vibe/feeling that the space will ultimately bring about.

Essentially, the apartment’s envelop (walls, floor, ceiling) serves as a clean and neutral canvas (off white) while touches of grey, light brown and black are added as accent colors as seen on the window blinds, furniture and fixtures.

After

“Van Anh distilled my vague ideas, concerns and needs while incorporating existing items into a beautiful concept that really brings the place alive.”
